Interview in The Guardian UK

[talks] 11.11
Print and video interviews published in The Guardian and at guardian.co.uk. Touches on many of the key issues for The Stack and The Center for Design and Geopolitics: new sovereignties, commonwealths, the limits of design, computational ontology, megacities and mega-walled gardens.
Ambivalent Remarks on Computation, Political Geography, Pedagogy

Accidental Geopolitics

Accidental Geopolitics

[talks] 05.11
Lecture at The Guardian Activate Summit, New York. General remarks on the correspondence of advanced technology and archaic politics, and the problem of re-imagining sovereignty and territory in relation to planetary-scale computing. (VIDEO)

[talks] 07.10
Short presentation for the Critical Code Studies conference at USC. It deals with the logics of addressing across IPv6, urban addresses and the conspiritorial function of the post in Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49. (VIDEO)
Ambivalence and/or Utopia

Ambivalence and/or Utopia

[talks] 04.10
Lecture on security and securitization as a utopian urban imaginary, and on the interweaving of the open and closed utopias in single formal structures, borders, embassies. Given at The Future of Urbanism conference at Taubman School of Architecture, University of Michigan and TCS event at Critical Theory Institute UC Irvine. (VIDEO)
The Reality Wars

The Reality Wars

[talks] 03.10
The closing remarks at UCSD VisArts Public Culture series. The "reality wars" (and its own variant of the paranoid style) have displaced the culture wars as the operating endeavor of public politics: We?ve moved to some extent from acrimony over the cultures of prestige/ status, sacrality/ profanation to one in which all those fights take place over what is even happening at all. Politics is ontological (again?)
Flesh and Form

Flesh and Form

[talks] 09.09
Talk on a panel on Architecture and Animality curated by Catherine Ingraham with Elizabeth Grosz, Sanford Kwinter and myself. Links systems and prosthesis theory with uses of animal bodies in contemporary art practices.
Notes on Habitat-scale Robotics and its Constraints

Notes on Habitat-scale Robotics and its Constraints

[talks] 08.09
The future of robotic architecture will be defined less by what is theoretically, mechanically possible than by the constraints it must negotiate. Will robotic architecture  become an important part of how our cities can accommodate new energy efficiencies demanded by global resource constraints, or because it adds significant  energy requirements to any architectural program, it will never reach fruition.
Salk Institute: SIH

Salk Institute: SIH

[talks] 07.09
Talk at the Salk Institute as part of a mobile conference at UCSD, on the institution's role in the formation of actor-network theory, and why it should have a political science program
The Post and the Pre

The Post and the Pre

[talks] 07.09
A talk I gave for Postopolis on a sunny afternoon on the roof of The Standard Hotel. It's about the fate, condition and responsibility of design, theory and design theory to not waste a good economic crisis. We don't know what we are Post and what we are Pre. Banish the word "recovery" from your vocabulary.

The Turing City?

The Turing City?

[talks] 03.09
Talk at Mediascapes symposium. SCI_Arc. March 28, 2009, connecting the history of the network city from 60's experimental practices, to contemporary computational ontologies and the figure of the totally recalculable city.
Undesigning the Emergency

Undesigning the Emergency

[talks] 03.09
Talk for O'Reilly ETech 2009. San Jose, CA. On the necessity of understanding physical urban systems as part of a general network condition, and a plea for truly open urban interfaces (soft, hard, public, private) as mechanism of redeveloping our dubious moment of transition.
All Design is Interface Design

All Design is Interface Design

[talks] 07.08
At Softwhere, the inaugeral meeting of the Software Studies project at UCSD, organized by Lev Manovich and Noah Waldrup-Fruin. In this I outline the interfacial modality scheme, that underlies much of my interface theory. (VIDEO)

Grand Theft Auto + Autolux @ M&A

Grand Theft Auto + Autolux @ M&A

[talks] 06.06
Benjamin Bratton likes to play Grand Theft Auto. He prefers, however, to watch someone else play it. "It's the first video game that you can watch as a movie," said the SCI-Arc professor, drinking coffee "backstage" at Materials & Applications, an experimental architecture and landscape center in Silver Lake. "It should have won Best Picture the year it came out, as far as I'm concerned."
