At UCSD I am a Principal Investigator at Calit2 (the California Institute of Telecommunications and Information Technology). Founded in 2000, Calit2 is one of the premier applied research institutes in the application of supercomputing and very-large scale data visualization across the sciences, humanities and social sciences.

I am the founding Director of D:GP The Center for Design and Geopolitics an interdisciplinary think-tank based at Calit2 and the University of California, San Diego that works to articulate and prototype speculative responses to  emergent geopolitical complexities posed by planetary-scale computation and ecological governance.

At UCSD, I am a Principal Investigator at the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA). Originally founded some thirty years ago, CRCA is the oldest research unit in the U.C. system focused the intersections of computation and aesthetics.

This project develops a general theory of the “interface,” as any point of contact between two complex systems (human or non-human, abstract or material, etc.) that governs the condition of exchange between those systems. In this, our contemporary aesthetics of logistics is diagrammed through the city, program, cinema, and software.
